Birch Grove's Reading Intervention Programs
The purpose of the following reading intervention programs is to prevent the need for further reading support and to help each student become a confident, lifelong reader.

  • Leveled Literacy Instruction (LLI)
    • For Kindergarten: K LLI is a tier 2, multi-sensory program.  Kindergarteners meet with a reading specialist for a 30-minute period, four days a week.  Students read books to learn voice-print match, word patterns, strategies for decoding words, and comprehension strategies.  The K LLI reading materials consist of controlled leveled texts (books that have increasing levels of difficulty, but with systematic infusion of controlled phonetic elements).
    • For Grades 1 and 2: Grades 1 and 2 LLI are tier 2, multi-sensory programs.  First and second grade students meet with a reading staff member in a small group for a 40-minute period, four days a week.  Students are taught to use decoding, fluency, and comprehension strategies while reading.  Students also participate in a text-related writing activity every other day.  The LLI reading materials consist of controlled leveled texts (books that have increasing levels of complexity, but with systematic infusion of controlled phonetic elements).
  • Reading Exellence Achieved Daily (READ) is a tier 2 program.  First and second grade students meet with a reading staff member for a 40-minute period, four days a week.  Students are taught to use decoding, fluency, and comprehension strategies while reading.  Students are also taught to use graphic organizers, such as webs, charts, or story maps, to respond to texts in writing.  READ materials consist of leveled texts.
  • Systematic Phonics (SP) is a tier 2, multi-sensory program.  First grade students meet with a reading staff member for a 40-minute period, four days a week.  Students are taught to use meaning, grammar, and sound/symbol strategies while reading.  The SP reading materials consist of decodable texts (books that contain words with controlled phonetic elements.)
