Our School Day
Each day our class begins with an morning meeting. This provides our class with a sense of community as we explore the upcoming day's activities together. We explore the calendar, weather, and a brief daily message along with the Pledge of Allegiance and a group greeting. The children have opportunities to share personal experiences with the class during this time as well.
Our literacy block includes small group activities that are appropriate for meeting children's individual needs. These activities may include alphabet games, phonemic awareness activities, writing and reading experiences. Children also read in guided reading groups that work on reading and comprehending texts at their instructional reading levels.
Shared reading activities are a central part of our kindergarten day. Together the class explores literature pieces related to our current theme of study. Concepts of print are integrated as we look for predictable events and patterns in the text.
Our writing workshop allows children to write daily. They will be learning how to write narrative, information, and opinion texts this year.
During activity center time, children choose various areas in the classroom to explore with their peers. Some of these areas include: blocks, dollhouse, kitchen, play-doh, writing, computer, and math and science manipulative areas.
Each day the children also attend a "special" area class. These specials include gym, library, music, and art.
